Open banking

Definition

Open banking is the practice of letting a bank customer share their account data with a licensed third-party app through a secure interface (API), instead of screen-scraping or manual file uploads. In Switzerland it is market-driven rather than legally mandated.

In detail

Unlike the EU, where PSD2 obliges banks to open their data, Swiss open banking is built on voluntary commercial agreements between banks and platform operators. The dominant Swiss hub is bLink, operated by SIX, alongside bilateral bank APIs.

For consumers this means access depends on which banks have joined a platform. Once a bank participates, you grant consent inside your e-banking, and the app receives read-only account and transaction data — never your login credentials.

  • Read-only by default: aggregation apps can see balances and transactions, not move money.
  • Consent is granted in your own e-banking and can be revoked there at any time.
  • Switzerland has no PSD2 equivalent — coverage varies by bank.
